The municipality of Vaughan was a drastically different place when one looks back in time to the 16th and 17th Centuries, when the first settlers to this area were indigenous people. Known as the Wendat/Wyandot Iroquoian culture, and these settlers spread out all over Ontario into the Region of York and into what is now known as Vaughan. The Wyandot people introduced trade with the ‘white man’ or rather, the British, some Americans, and the French that were also making their way into and inhabiting areas of Ontario by the late 17th and early 18th Centuries. Through several archaeological sites throughout the Vaughan area and it has come to light that the Huron-Wyandot people developed one heavily populated village that looked out to the east of the Humber River. By 1850, Vaughan officially became a ‘Township’ and it wasn’t until 1971 that Vaughan earned the title of ‘Town’ and 1991 brought Vaughan into well earned ‘City’ entitlement. Vaughan may have started out small and remained small for many years, but it now sits as the 5th largest city within the Greater Toronto Area (a massive jump in population between 1996 to 2006 pushed into city status). The size of Vaughan expanded with the inclusion of 6 major communities (Kleinburg, Woodbridge, Concord, Maple, Thornhill and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre).Vaughan’s position makes it a very enticing place to live and work, as it borders Brampton & Caledon in the west, Markham & Richmond Hill in the east, part of Richmond Hill & King in the north and Toronto in the south.
